The veteran Swede escaped a red card during the game, but TV replays clearly showed his elbow crash into the head of Mings, an act of foolish retaliation for an apparent stamp on him by the Bournemouth player that was also missed by the referee.
The FA will assess the incident and TV pundit Jamie Carragher said the Manchester United star “will get a ban, no doubt about that.”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic will almost certainly not have helped himself with his own comical analysis afterwards, saying: “You have the TV, you can see the images, I jump up and jump high and he (Mings) jumps into my elbow.”
Mings denied that his stamp was deliberate, but he too faces a retrospective ban of three matches from the FA.
United manager Jose Mourinho declined to talk too much about the incident, but was clearly in damage limitation mode as he said: “Zlatan is a big guy. We do not cry to the media about what happened in a match.
“I don’t comment on the incident. I comment on the big decisions of the game, the penalties, they were both correct. The referee was good. It was a good performance by the referee.
“The other things I didn’t see. I am not impressed too much. It is an altercation.
“The ref tries to analyse the intentions. One player does this, one does that.
“That is not important. I am not here to say what players deserve.”
