WORLD surfing champion Tyler Wright and Australian rival Sally Fitzgibbons are on course for a semi-final showdown at the Australian Open at Manly on Sunday.

If both surfers advance through their quarter-final battles as expected they will meet in the first semi-final of the day.

It will be the first time Wright and multiple world tour runner-up Fitzgibbons have met in 2017 and will be the biggest test of the pre-season for both.

Fitzgibbons on Friday booked her quarter-final spot against Hawaiian Malia Manuel after downing Aussie Claire Bevilacqua while Wright defeated Dimity Stoyle to set up her quarter-final stoush with Philippa Anderson.

“It was chunky, stormy, crazy out there,” Fitzgibbons said.

“I can’t wait for the next round. Every heat I surf I feel I get better.”

Keely Andrew is the fourth Aussie to advance at the world qualifying series event and is pitted against Frenchwoman Johanna Defay in her quarter-final.

The Australian Open is the only event Wright will surf before she begins her world title defence in earnest at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast in March.

“It’s just good to test out some of the things l’ve been working on,” Wright said.

“There’s always something new to learn.”
