World Cup 2018: Marcus Rashford gives Gareth Southgate England issue after Costa Rica win

Marcus Rashford and Danny Welbeck were both on target as the Three Lions rounded off their World Cup preparations with a 2-0 win over Costa Rica at Elland Road.

Rashford fired into the roof of the net with a stunning 30-yard strike after 13 minutes, while Welbeck added the finishing touches to the victory in the second half when he headed home Dele Alli’s cross.

After a two-week camp, the Three Lions will head to Russia in high spirits.

Although Southgate has come under scrutiny for choosing arguably a youthful and inexperienced squad, he has revealed he hasn’t made any concrete decisions as to who will start against Tunisia on June 18.

He said: “I might sleep on it!”

When pressed further, Southgate continued: “If it’s complicated, it’s in a really good way. We need options.

“We seem to have got through the two games without serious injuries and we have given ourselves a really good platform.”

Southgate was also effusive in his praise for Rashford, adding: “What pleased me most is that Marcus Rashford enjoyed his football tonight.

“He played with a real swagger. He’s a Manchester United player and he got booed at the start and cheered off at the end.

“We have got great competition for places throughout the team – you saw that tonight.”

Rashford believes he has areas to improve with his game, but didn’t temper expectations of how far England can go at the tournament.

He said: “You work on them [goals] in training every day and when one comes up in a game it’s a reward.

“I feel in good physical form leading up to the tournament.

“I still need to get in the box a bit more to finish off chances.

“It means a lot to be involved but going to the World Cup and playing a major part in my main aim.

“We have got a good chance. Anything is possible and we have to go there with the highest expectations.”

The victory ensured Gareth Southgate is unbeaten in 10 matches since he took charge in June last year.
