Toto Wolff reveals Lewis Hamilton was contacted after Nico Rosberg retirement

Rosberg quit F1 at the end of last season after beating Lewis Hamilton to the 2016 title.

The announcement sparked weeks of speculation over who would replace the German.

Finland’s Valtteri Bottas eventually took up the second seat at Mercedes, joining from Williams.

And Toto Wolff says Hamilton was briefed about Mercedes’ shortlist of candidates before they went for Bottas.

“After we shortlisted drivers who we were interested in I gave Lewis a call to get his opinion,” Wolff told the BBC.

“He is a member of the team so it is important to hear all the options and that was one part.”

Wolff also revealed he was inundated with calls from rival F1 drivers in the aftermath of Rosberg’s retirement.

“We were in Vienna and announced Nico was retiring,” Wolff said.

“And I think within 45 minutes I had almost everybody texting or trying to call, begging me [laughs].”
