Teen surfing stars aiming for Olympic success

SHE’S a fearless teen tyro making waves as surfing surges towards Olympic status at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Central Coast boardrider Macy Callaghan, 17, just missed qualifying for the women’s professional world tour.

But she’s been rushed into the line-up for the Roxy Pro world tour opener on the Gold Coast as an injury replacement this weekend. She’ll be competing against her good mate, US surfer Caroline Marks, 16, who qualified last year.

Callaghan is determined to win an Olympic spot and face off against her friend in a few years.

“It’s nice to have someone your own age to hang out with at events,” Callaghan said.

“And it would be great to get to the Olympics together.”
