After the match was delayed by over an hour due to a power failure, Zverev overcame a slow start before prevailing in straight sets – 6-4, 6-4.
The German, who already has two Masters 1000 series titles to his name (Rome and Montreal), will hope to book his place in the final when he faces Pablo Carreno-Busta later today.
The world No 5 has been tipped to be the natural successor to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the future, but his results in the Grand Slams have something left to be desired – a fourth round appearance at Wimbledon last year his best showing.
But Zverev thinks he is rapidly approaching his best form which will no doubt be a worry to rivals.
When asked about his form after his victory over Coric, he said: “I don’t think I’m far away at all.
“I’m not away at all to be honest.
“The beginning of the seasons are very tough for me because I’m someone who does a lot of physical work in the off season and I have to get used to my new body.
“I put on about 4kg – I’m heavier than I was, stronger than I was and it influences your tennis. It just takes time.”
On facing Carreno-Busta for the first time, Zverev added: “It will be a very difficult match.
“It doesn’t get easy but I will be ready for it.”
