Max Verstappen: Jacques Villeneuve makes Lewis Hamilton claim about Red Bull ace

That is according to 1997 F1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve.

In the opening race of the season in Australia, Verstappen finished sixth, nearly 30 seconds behind winner Sebastian Vettel.

Verstappen started the race in fourth but a slow start saw him fall behind Kevin Magnussen’s Haas and then a spin at turn one cost him further places.

Although the Dutchman climbed back through the field, he was unable to overtake Fernando Alonso’s Renault powered McLaren. After the race, Verstappen bemoaned his performance and claimed that if he was a viewer at home, he would have “turned off the TV”.

But Villeneuve believes that though Verstappen is good, the Red Bull driver needs to be more consistent like Hamilton, Vettel and Alonso.

He told Spanish outlet AS: “In F1 the most representative and global racers are Alonso, Vettel, Hamilton and the two of Red Bull.

“The rest have much to prove yet.

“And Max, although he is good, is also very irregular, he must improve in that aspect.”

Villeneuve also opened up on Carlos Sainz Jr, claiming the Renault ace is better than Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas.

He said: “Sainz, is good, better than Bottas, but he still has something to prove.”
