Masters 2017: Fred Couples rolls back the years with stunning round at Augusta

Couples, who won the Masters 25 years ago, heads into the weekend in the top ten for the sixth time in the last eight years.

It is the best record of any player during that period and an inspiration to 57-year-olds everywhere. And even Couples is at a loss to explain how he seems to be improving with age.

“This is my favourite place in the whole world, I enjoy playing here and I feel like if I’m healthy enough to swing hard at it I can do well,” he said.

“I’m nowhere near as long as these guys now so I have to make some putts to hang with them but my putting has been very good over the first two days. It’s very odd. I putt really well here. I can see the lines.”

Couples, who almost spun his approach shot into the cup at the final hole, is only three strokes off the lead and is viewing himself as a serious contender for the Green Jacket. If he claims it tomorrow, he will become the oldest Masters winner by 11 years.

“I’m a little edgy because I know I can still play this course well whether I’m 57 or not,” he said. “My goal isn’t to come here and just play golf.

“Win it? How can I say no. I’ll have to play unbelievable golf but if I do that Saturday and Sunday of course I’ll have a shot at winning.”
