Manchester City vs Liverpool: Latest Champions League scores from the Etihad Stadium
Liverpool and Manchester City go head-to-head for a place in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
City may boast home advantage but it is the Reds who go in as favourites to progress thanks to their 3-0 win in the first leg.
After a dominant season Pep Guardiola’s side have stumbled twice in a week. If their first-leg humbling at Anfield hurt, then their defeat by rivals Manchester United at the weekend seemed to double down on the pain.
For a side who have become used to imposing their will on opponents, conceding six goals in 180 minutes of football represents a major wobble.

LVG…
19:30: Louis van Gaal is in the house folks!
The former Manchester United manager is pitch side and has been spotted gobbling up a bag of chips.
I’m afraid I can’t bring you the photo because I’m skint and can’t afford it, but I can assure you that it’s amusing. I’ve also zoomed in a thousand times and can’t see any mayonnaise.
I’m reliably informed that’s a crime in Holland…
TWITTER ROUND-UP
Jonathan: Pep has given us a huge advantage by picking an unbalanced team who won’t be familiar with their roles. We have our regular line-up who know their jobs. C’mon you Reds!
Tom: Guardiola playing three at the back without wing-backs will only make things worse against an attacking team like Liverpool. Salah to run the show again tonight.
Charles: That Man City team is the sort of team you have on the pitch when you are getting hammered on FIFA (or any other football related computer game).
CITY ARRIVAL
19:20: The Manchester City side received a different welcome this evening. Plenty of blue flags and gentle applause from excited fans.
Not sure about the “catwalk” style entry with an announcer introducing each play off the bus. Feels like a budget Zoolander…

PREDICTIONS
19:17: I know what you’re thinking. “Jamie, we would rather hear what Charlie Nicholas has predicted than read the insightful opinions of Steven Gerrard.”
As you wish.
“I don’t think City will do it though because I see Liverpool scoring. You could see at the weekend again against United that City are defensively vulnerable when they have to take risks,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
STEVIE SPEAKS…
19:15: Steven Gerrard admits he is nervous, but reckons Liverpool will have just enough to get through.
“I think I’m confident in terms of Liverpool progressing,” he said on BT Sport.
“But certainly there’s a nervousness there, not just from myself, but everyone I’ve spoken to building into this game. It’s because of City’s quality in the final third, they can open any team up. I think they will be relentless tonight.
“I think the hope and the confidence comes from Liverpool the other way. City have players you can hurt and City have players who take risks. Liverpool are deadly when they get in. I think it will be tough for Liverpool today, there’s a lot of hard work to do. But I have confidence they will get through.”

GIGI TASK
19:10: With Emre Can injured and Jordan Henderson suspended, Jurgen Klopp hands midfield screening duties to Georginio Wijnaldum.
If City are to make an unlikely comeback, this will be an area of the park they simply must exploit.
Wijnaldum is more comfortable roaming further forward but will be under strict instruction to show discipline in the centre of the park. With Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva pulling the strings for City, that may not even be enough.
TWITTER ROUND-UP
Olly: I think Man City will come out strong and score a couple in first half hour. They will give one up on a mental lapse and Liverpool will go through.
John: It’s a win-win situation tonight. One of City or Liverpool will get knocked out with the other likely to face Real, Barca or Bayern in the semis!
Isis: Anyone in the ‘Has Pep lost the plot’ camp? Gotta go for it I suppose. Relax, it’s rush goalie and Ederson at left wing back!

LIAM INPUT…
18:55: Everyone’s favourite Oasis brother Liam Gallagher has delivered his opinion on Pep Guardiola’s selection.
“No Sergio Aguero, no Vincent Kompany. F*** right off Pep Guardiola. As you were, LG,” he tweeted.
Yes, I changed a few spellings and added punctuation. Don’t tell him!
TEAM NEWS – MANCHESTER CITY
18:50: Four changes for Pep Guardiola.
Don’t ask me what formation he’s playing. The Spanish tactician has a habit of describing his formation as “fluid” when asked. Which is incredibly unhelpful…
Anyway, City make four changes from the side who suffered a shock defeat to Manchester United.
Kyle Walker, Aymeric Laporte, Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus are named in the starting XI.
Vincent Kompany, Fabian Delph and Ilkay Gundogan are named among the substitutes, while Danilo can’t even make the match day squad.
Sergio Aguero is also on the bench. I imagine we’ll be seeing him at some point.

TEAM NEWS – LIVERPOOL
18:45: Liverpool fans across the land are celebrating the news that Mohamed Salah has been passed fit and has returned to Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI.
The Egyptian superstar is one on FIVE changes to the side who drew 0-0 with Everton in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Roberto Firmino return.
Nathaniel Clyne, Ragnar Klavan, Danny Ings and Dominic Solanke drop to the bench. Captain Jordan Henderson is suspended.
SCENES…
18:40: Liverpool’s arrival at the Etihad Stadium was a rather low-key affair bearing none of the scenes witnessed at Anfield a week ago.
The Reds’ bus, escorted by one police car and three vans, drove along the Ashton New Road to general indifference from the handful of City fans making their way towards the ground.
One home fan was seen to applaud, although it was difficult to say whether he was being sarcastic or not, as the coach entered the apron of the stadium and quickly disappeared down a service tunnel with very little fuss.

STERLING SPOTLIGHT
18:25: England winger Raheem Sterling was a surprise omission from the starting line-up against his former club and it was a tactical gamble which blew up in City’s face.
Guardiola admitted it sent the wrong signals and duly fielded Sterling up front against United, where he missed a number of chances.
The Catalan coach may have been guilty of overthinking things of late and the smart money must surely be on a return to the flank and a return to his previously productive form.

GET THE PAINT
18:20: If face painting doesn’t inspire Manchester City to victory, I really don’t know what will…
TWITTER ROUND-UP
Foxy: I don’t care who wins tonight but if Liverpool score an early goal and ruin it for the neutral I will never forgive them.
John: Sweating and shaking already. Don’t know why I feel like this because if City had a three-goal lead I would think the tie was done.
Tom: If Manchester City complete the comeback against Liverpool in the second leg I will run down my street naked.
I will NOT let you forget this, Tom…

ALL ABOUT THE MERCH
18:13: Subtle Peep Show reference there, it’s all I could do to lighten the mood after seeing these half-and-half scarves selling like hot cakes at the Emirates.
Think I’ll pass…
SALAH…
18:10: The prolific Egyptian sat out the Merseyside derby after appearing to tweak his groin in the first leg but is widely expected to feature against City.
Questions still remain though.
Will he start? Can he manage 90 minutes? Will he be at his electric best when he does take to the field? If the answers are in Liverpool’s favour, so too are their prospects of netting an away goal and putting the tie even further out of City’s grasp.
We’ll find out if he’s starting very shortly indeed…

GOOD EVENING
18:00: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Champions League.
Tonight is quite a big deal folks…
I’m not sure if you are aware, but Manchester City host Liverpool for a place in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Pep Guardiola’s side require nothing short of a miracle to qualify having been humbled 3-0 in the first leg at Anfield last Wednesday.
To make matters worse, that defeat was swiftly followed by another capitulation as they surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to rivals Manchester United.
Can Guardiola’s men turn the tables in dramatic fashion on home turf and without the aid of an away goal? Let’s find out!
MANCHESTER CITY vs LIVERPOOL
Sergio Aguero could make his first start for more than a month as Manchester City seek to overturn a 3-0 aggregate deficit in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool.
The Argentina striker returned to action following a knee injury as a late substitute in Saturday’s derby loss to Manchester United.
There may still be a doubt over defender John Stones, who missed the derby with a muscle problem, but left-back Benjamin Mendy (knee) is the only definite absentee.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will make a late decision on leading scorer Mohamed Salah’s availability.
The Egypt international was rested for the weekend’s Merseyside derby because of a groin problem but returned to training with a fitness coach yesterday.
Captain Jordan Henderson is suspended and while young midfielder Ben Woodburn has returned to training after a month-long absence Klopp is still awaiting updates on left-backs Andrew Robertson and Alberto Moreno.
