Manchester City will clinch the Premier League title with six games to spare if they beat arch-rivals Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium.

Following City’s 3-0 humbling by Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday, Jose Mourinho’s side will be hoping to inflict a second successive defeat on Pep Guardiola’s men this week.

It has long been a case of when rather than if Guardiola’s side will win the Premier League – and there could be few better ways of doing it than against the neighbours that have long lorded over you.

Second-place United head into the weekend 16 points behind the leaders, meaning City merely need three points to win the fifth league title in their history.

17:25: Manchester United Jose Mourinho tells Sky Sports: “In this moment, we have one more point than Liverpool and two matches in hand. Spurs are also in the same race as us to finish second but we know it will be difficult. If we get three or one point today, it will be important for us.

“It is always the same approach. When they have the ball, we have to try not to concede and defend as a unit, be disciplined and not forget their great qualities. With the ball, we have to be aggressive.

Jose Mourinho was asked about Pep Guardiola’s claim that he was offered the chance to sign Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in January.

He said: “Guardiola says that, the agent denies, so one of them is saying the truth and one of them is not telling the truth. Honestly, I am not interested in knowing which one is the liar and which one is the honest guy.”

17:15: Why does he do it to himself? Paul Pogba is never far away from the headlines and today it seems to be no different.

The French midfielder decided to dyed his hair blue after Saturday’s victory over Swansea, and it’s caused quite a stir.

Turning up to the game against their rivals, who can seal the Premier League with victory today, with hair the same colour as their shirts will surely rile many.

Neville says Pogba is not “wise”, lacks “sense” and needs to start showing he is serious about playing football.

17:10: There is no danger of the ‘2018 champions’ merchandise being left to rot in a corner of the Etihad Stadium, but United will try to ensure it stays in its box for the time being.

While tensions between Guardiola and Jose Mourinho appear to have thawed since their time in LaLiga, it would be galling for the Portuguese and all connected to United to see City win.

The Red Devils will be desperate to deny what captain Vincent Kompany has called a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to seal it in this way.

17:10: Sergio Aguero returns to the bench as Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola makes four changes against a Manchester United side that includes Paul Pogba.

The Argentina striker has been out since March 4 with a knee issue, while Danilo, Fabian Delph, Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling come into the side that suffered a shock 3-0 loss at Liverpool in Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Kyle Walker, Aymeric Laporte, Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus are dropped to the substitutes’ bench, while United boss Jose Mourinho starts Pogba the day after Guardiola said he had been offered the midfielder.

Manchester City will check on the fitness of top scorer Sergio Aguero ahead of the derby at the Etihad Stadium.

The Argentina striker has been out for the past month with a knee injury but City are hopeful he could return for a game which could see them clinch the Premier League title. Left-back Benjamin Mendy, who has been sidelined since September with a knee injury, is the only definite absentee.

Sergio Romero is the only United absentee. The back-up goalkeeper is sidelined after being involved in a collision on Argentina duty, with 17-year-old Matej Kovar brought into first-team training on the eve of the derby as Kieran O’Hara is set to play in the reserves on Friday.

Versatile Daley Blind is back in contention for United, while Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Ander Herrera have also recently returned to full fitness.
