Lucky undies will give support

IF IT is for the National Jockeys Trust, Cairns hoops John Lambie and Sonja Wiseman are more than happy to change their “undies”.

Australian-owned betting operator Ubet has released a range of “lucky undies” just in time for the Spring Carnival’s biggest races, designed to give racing enthusiasts a wearable lucky charm, with all proceeds going to the National Jockeys Trust.

The Trust aims to relieve the financial hardship on jockeys who have suffered falls or serious injuries and provide families with the support, kindness and recognition they deserve.

Featuring an instantly recognisable horseshoe symbol, Ubet’s lucky undies are designed to wear under (or over) any Spring Racing outfit, silks, Lycra or jodhpurs. Leading race bodies around the country as well as current jockeys have already jumped behind the cause and are encouraging others to do the same.

Lambie, who rides out of Cannon Park, says the work the Trust does every year — as many as 887 riders have lost their lives since Australian racing first began — is well-respected within the industry.

“It is for a great cause, they do a lot of work for jockeys around Australia,” Lambie said. “As jockeys, we will do whatever to help the Trust.

“Ubet is doing great work in supporting the Trust and hopefully us jockeys in the Far North can help out.”

Lambie had four rides at Cannon Park on Tuesday without grabbing a winner but was looking forward to a few quality rides this Saturday at Home Hill before racing returns to Cairns Jockey Club this Tuesday for Melbourne Cup Day.

Race-calling legend and Ubet ambassador Johnny Tapp said the lucky undies are a great way of raising awareness of the unspoken side of racing.

“The National Jockey’s Trust does amazing work to support jockeys and their families in times of need and what better time to highlight that work than during the Spring Carnival?” Tapp said.

“I’m looking forward to seeing many jockeys and punters sport their undies and unite over such a great cause.

“Over the years I’ve heard of every superstition under the sun — from lucky numbers and colours to lucky seats at the racetrack — and lucky undies are one of the more common ones.”

Ubet have partnered with the aptly named underwear brand to create the range and the betting operator is looking forward to injecting a bit of fun, with a tongue-in-cheek fashion statement. Chairman of the National Jockeys Trust Paul Innes said the support of Ubet will go a long way in helping jockeys and their families.
