SHOOTOUT: TRIPLE EIGHT DOMINATES
Shane Van Gisbergen put car #97 on pole position as Triple Eight-prepared entries filled the first three places on the grid for Race 22 at the Gold Coast 600.
The reigning series champion’s lap time of 1:10.838 was just 0.066s quicker than Red Bull Holden Racing teammate Jamie Whincup, with Team Vortex’s Craig Lowndes third.
It was a disappointing Shootout for the trio of Prodrive entries, with Chaz Mostert the best of their qualifiers in fifth. Both Cam Waters and Mark Winterbottom made contact with the wall at turn 10, recording the slowest times of the eight completed laps.
Both Michael Caruso and Lee Holdsworth were hit with kerb penalties, relegating them to ninth and tenth on the grid respectively.

QUALIFYING: SVG ON TOP, SLADE’S FIERY EXIT
A dramatic ending to Race 22 Qualifying saw the Brad Jones Racing Holden of Tim Slade suffer an engine failure and catch fire, leaving Shane Van Gisbergen as the fastest qualifier for the Top 10 Shootout.
Slade, who qualified 12th fastest, tagged the wall in the fast Turn 6-10 complex, with subsequent damage leading to the engine failure.
BJR crew members were forced to extinguish a fire in the engine of car #14 as it returned to pit lane, with Slade exiting the car unharmed. The incident left the team in a race against time to repair the damage and complete an engine change before Race 22.
Oil on the track from Slade’s car meant most drivers were unable to complete a final flying lap, leaving Red Bull Holden Racing Team’s Van Gisbergen on top of the time sheets with a fastest lap of 1:10.370.
David Reynolds, Chaz Mostert and Cam Waters traded blows for second, third and fourth respectively throughout the session, but neither were able to catch Van Gisbergen’s benchmark time.
Jamie Whincup, Michael Caruso, Craig Lowndes, James Courtney and Lee Holdsworth completed the line up for this afternoon’s Top 10 Shootout.
It was a disastrous session for DJR Team Penske, with Scott McLaughlin (13th) and Fabian Coulthard (22nd) unable to challenge for the top 10.
