Sky Sports claim raids were carried out on both stadiums this morning.
Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs declared the raids after an investigation into the clubs’ transfer dealings.
Both stadiums were the subject of warrants and Newcastle’s managing director, Lee Charnley, has been arrested.
Charnley has been at Mike Ashley’s side since 2014 and has been largely involved in first-team recruitment.
HMRC say they have arrested “several men working within professional football industry for suspected income tax & national insurance fraud.”
“180 HMRC officers have been deployed across the UK and France today. Investigators have searched a number of premises in the North East and South East of England and arrested the men and also seized business records, financial records, computers and mobile phones.
“The French authorities are assisting the UK investigation, have made arrests and several locations have been searched in France.
“This criminal investigation sends a clear message that, whoever you are, if you commit tax fraud you can expect to face the consequences. As this is an ongoing investigation HMRC is unable to provide any further detail at this time.”
The news will come as a huge blow to Newcastle who are still in the midst of celebrating promotion back to the Premier League.
Newcastle’s 4-1 win over Preston on Monday night finally secured them an automatic promotion spot with Rafa Benitez taking the Magpies back tot England’s top flight at the first time of asking.
Details regarding the investigation into the raid on West Ham’s London Stadium are yet to be released.
A West Ham United spokesperson said: “The Club is cooperating fully with HMRC to assist their enquiries. No further comment will be made at this time.”
