Johanna Konta v Simona Halep LIVE: Wimbledon scores and updates as Brit bids for semis

Konta takes on No.2 seed Halep on Centre Court and the stakes have rarely been higher.

The pair don’t get on with one another after a flare-up at the Fed Cup earlier this year.

And, crucially, there’s a Wimbledon semi-final spot up for grabs.

Venus Williams and Garbine Muguruza have already won – but who will join them in the last four?

Johanna Konta v Simona Halep live – Wimbledon updates from Centre Court

5.16pm: It may be raining outside but things are looking brighter for Konta here. She hits a forehand winner to get to 15-40 to carve out two break points.

But she can’t take either, two returns into the net and it’s back to deuce. A third and she’s down an advantage.

Halep takes the game when Konta sends a forehand return long and it’s 1-1.

It’s absolutely tipping it down outside, right now. You can hear the raindrops on the roof of Centre.

Play elsewhere has been suspended.

5.12pm: Not now Jo, not now. A shocking start to the second set sees her send a simple volley wide for 0-15. A forehand error and she’s 0-30 down.

Mountain to climb here. She adjusts her pony tail, it’s almost like she wants to take a few seconds to focus right now.

It works. Konta goes bang, bang, bang to win three points in a row.

Attack proving the best form of defence here as she continues to go for her shots – and she holds.

Cameras pan to a rain-soaked Henman Hill, where hundreds are watching on with their umbrellas. Die-hard fans these Brits.

5,07pm: HALEP TAKES FIRST SET 7-6.

Konta’s serve has gone AWOL just when she needs it. 93 per cent first serve before the breaker, only 50 per cent during it.

Halep wins a stunning point after a long rally that, in truth, she has no right to win. She leads 3-1 – then double faults. Oh boy.

Now it’s Konta’s turn to feel the presure. She tries to take a forehand drive volley out the air but sends it well, well long.

Two missed first serves in a row for Konta now, the same number she misses in the entire first six games, and she’s down 5-2.

Halep caps off a magnificent tie-break by winning the next two points to take the opening set.

Konta came from behind to beat Halep in Miami. Now she has to do the same again.

5pm: Konta has missed just TWO first serves all match. The second comes in this game but it doesn’t put her out her stride.

Things look precarious at 30-30 before Halep slams into the net. Konta serves out the game and we’re into a tie-break.

Ellie Goulding in the stands to watch this one. Terrific entertainment for the Starry-Eyed singer.

4.54pm: There’s a weird atmosphere under the roof in Centre Court right now (yes, it’s still raining outside and play is suspended elsewhere). It’s like there’s more relief, than joy, when Konta wins a point.

And when Halep comes up trumps, it’s almost like the Brits want to acknowledge a good shot but can barely bring themselves to do, slowly, begrudingly clapping their hands. Still, you can barely blame them for failing to know how to act. They last had a female semi-finalist back in 1978.

Konta is in far better form than she was at the start, now. Her serve is hitting the lines and she holds to 15.

Halep responds with a hold of her own and Konta is serving to take the opening set into a tie-break.

“Simona Halep is starting to like grass a lot more than she has at any point in her career,” John McEnroe says. In unashamed bias, let’s hope it’s her final match of the grasscourt season.

4.47pm: Worrying moments for JoKo as she goes 0-30 down on her own serve. Crucial times these at the business end of the set. Slip now and she’ll pay the price.

But that, Johanna Konta, is terrific. She takes the next four points in a row to get to 4-4.

Halep responds with a service hold of her own and Konta is now serving to stay in the set at 5-4 down.

4.41pm: That’s more like it, Johanna Konta! She holds to love then breaks back to love.

The groundstrokes are finding the mark, her service is clicking and she’s strung together the last eight points to get this set back on serve.

After a slow start, Konta is starting to fire.

4.34pm: Again there are better signs out there for the Brit. She gets to deuce again on the Halep serve but can’t take her chances.

Two more unforced errors gifts Halep the hold and she leads 4-1.

4.31pm: Better, much better, from Konta. She’s on the board after putting in a far more convincing service game.

She wins the first three points in a row to go 40-0 up before briefly slipping up.

Two unforced errors and it’s 40-30 but Halep sends a wild forehand wide and Konta takes the game.

3-1 down, the Brit.

4.26pm: Halep has a real steely look in her eye. She looks like she’s ready to go to war out there.

She fluffs a game point at 40-30, though, and dumps a forehand into the net for Konta’s first break point of the match.

She can’t take it, though, sending her service return long. It’s back to deuce and another Konta return goes long. Sloppy there from the Brit, who makes it three long forehands in a row to hand Halep the game. Has to improve.

She’s already 3-0 down in the opening set and we’ve barely been playing 10 minutes.

4.20pm: Not the start us Brits were looking for. Konta is broken and trails 2-0.

Konta gets to 30-30 on the opening Halep service game before the Romanian holds her nerve – and her serve – to take it out.

Halep responds by breaking to 15 to silence Centre Court.

4.15pm: The players have knocked off (amicably, I must add) and it’s Halep to serve first…

4.05pm: And this one has history… Johanna Konta and Simona Halep just don’t get on.

It all kicked off at a Fed Cup match a couple of months ago and they aren’t the best of friends.

The full story behind the Johanna Konta and Simona Halep rivalry – and why they don’t like each other – is here.

4pm: A British woman, in the quarter-final of Wimbledon… whatever next!

Step forward the awesome Johanna Konta. Yesterday she became the first British woman to make the last eight since Jo Durie did so in 1984.

Now can she go one better? Can she make the semi-finals?

The answer will come clear over the next couple of hours.

She goes for glory on Centre Court today, under the roof, away from the rain.
