Joe Joyce to fight Ian Lewison in ambitious professional debut on David Haye’s first card

Haye has not fought since tearing his Achilles tendon against Tony Bellew in March but promises he has not retired from boxing.

However, the former cruiserweight and heavyweight champion is already preparing for life after the ring by undertaking a promotional venture with former Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer.

And the pair will present their first card on October 20 with 2016 Olympic super-heavyweight silver medallist headlining.

The 31-year-old is a decorated amateur with gold at European and Commonwealth golds to his name as well as a bronze at the World Amateur Championships in Baku two years ago.

But the Brit signed for Haye in July and is now set to grace the O2 Indigo Arena with his professional debut on Dave.

Debutants are usually given four or six rounds to prove themselves in the professional ranks first time out.

However, Joyce will go a maximum of 10 rounds Lewison, a 12-3-1 heavyweight who faced against Dillian Whyte last year with the British title on the line and just four weeks to prepare.

And the ambitious choice of Lewison signals Joyce’s intentions to rattle through the heavyweight ranks.

“We’re very excited for Joe to get his pro career started,” Schaefer told ESPN yesterday.

“In his second fight, there’s a good chance he will already go for the Commonwealth title.

“As his trainer, Ismael Salas, told me, he believes that within six or seven fights Joe will be ready to fight for a world title.

“Everybody keeps telling me how good this guy is, and he had the amateur record to prove it.”
