Take a look at the latest TAB market update for the Tramway Stakes

CHAMPION Winx continues to ease in betting but she is still at unbackable for most punters in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Winx opened at $ 1.06 with TAB Fixed Odds when the Chelsmford field was declared on Wednesday and despite her prohibitive odds, there was some significant bets invested on the mighty mare.

THE MAGIC THAT SETS CHAMP APART

They included a huge wager of $ 63,000 at $ 1.06 plus bets of $ 5,724 and $ 5,000 at those odds. Another punter had $ 7,000 at $ 1.08. Despite these sizeable wagers, Winx has “drifted” to $ 1.09 to win the Chelmsford.

If Winx starts at these odds, it will be the shortest price bookies have offered about the mare in her career — equalling her odds when she won the George Main Stakes last year.

Winx might be stifling betting in the Chelmsford Stakes but the best betting race on the program comes in the six-horse Concorde Stakes field.

There has been plenty of interest in the Group 3 sprint with Redzel firming from $ 4.60 into $ 3.50 after consistent support including bets $ 2,000 and $ 1,000 at $ 4.

But there has also been good support for Spieth who opened at $ 3.70 but into $ 2.50 favouritism. Some of the bigger bets on Spieth include $ 1,000 at $ 3.50 twice, $ 1,000 at $ 3, $ 1,500 at $ 2.70 and $ 2,000 at $ 2.60.

Schedule is resuming in the TAB Highway but there has been big money for the sprinter all week including bets of $ 4,000 at $ 8 and $ 2,500 at $ 7. He has firmed into $ 6.

PRICE CHECK

Merovee (race one) was impressive winning his maiden against older horses in a 1350m maiden at Newcastle’s Beaumont track three weeks ago. He has to come back slightly in trip here but the spacious Randwick track will suit. Merovee meets much stronger grade here but he is a colt with loads of natural ability. Needs tempo and clear galloping room but if he gets both, he will run a huge race around $ 7 mark.

TRIAL POINTERS

Beau Geste (race one) is $ 15 to win the Golden Rose. An impressive debut winner at the midweeks at his opening campaign, this James Cummings-trained son of Street Cry has trialled twice for his return, the most recent resulted in a third to his Golden Rose-bound stablemate Kementari but you could make a strong case that Beau Geste was the more impressive of the two. Expect a bold run from him.

Veladero (race nine) is a Chris Waller-trained four-year-old that has been gelded since he last ran in consecutive Group 3 races in Brisbane. Already a multiple stakes-placegetter, Veladero has been sounded out in two trials, the most recent a booming win by more than two lengths over his stablemate Egg Tart with Heavens Above in third. He has come back very well.

WORK WHISPERS

I Am Excited (race six) didn’t have much luck first-up when four lengths off Menari in the Rosebud. She was bailed up the fence for most of the straight and never got the chance to utilise her explosive finish. The daughter of Snitzel has been working extremely well since, particularly her gallop on the course proper on Tuesday at Warwick Farm when timed in 54.72s for 800m, last 400m in 24.06s, home the final 200m in 11.25s.

Happy Clapper (race eight) has been trialling as well, if not better than ever in the lead-up to the Tramway Stakes. The Pat Webster-trained winner of $ 2.2m worked over 1000m at Randwick in 1:08.66s quickening up the last 400m in 24.67s. High-class gelding who is in great nick at present.

THE BEST BET

Up ‘N’ Rolling (race two) thrashed his rivals by a widening margin of more than three lengths when resuming at Canterbury earlier this month. The runner-up that day, Notio has since franked the form by winning at the same track during the week. Up ‘N’ Rolling is jumping from 1550m straight to 2000m but fitness will not be an issue. He can keep winning.

EACH WAY

Tom Melbourne (race eight) was absolutely bolting behind the tiring leader and did not get out until too late when he closed rapidly on Kingsguard to just miss at Rosehill when resuming. It is significant that the Chris Waller stable has given Tom Melbourne nearly a month between runs and kept him to 1400m here. If he runs up to his Rosehill run he is good value at $ 6.
