Health council renews sponsorship

APUNIPIMA Cape York Health Council is to sponsor the Australian Indigenous All-Stars Men’s National Basketball Team for the second year running. As the 2017 naming sponsors, Apunipima will work with the All-Stars to promote their no-smoking and sugary drinks campaigns throughout Cape York communities. The fourth annual trans-Tasman Series against the New Zealand Maori Men’s national team is set to take place in Cairns later this year.

Ankle biters attack

LET’S hope the ankle situation for Cairns’ QBL clubs comes in threes alone.

Jarrad Weeks, Jade Kennedy and Micheal Demertze have all suffered ankle concerns in the past few weeks which has seen them miss game time.

Demertze’s ankle is clearly the worse of the three while Weeks and Kennedy should be back soon enough.

Hopefully that is the end of the Far North ankle concerns for 2017.

Jade tough enough

SPEAKING of Kennedy, there is no doubt in the world how tough the Dolphins forward is.

After going over on her ankle on Friday night at the Fish Tank, she backed up on Sunday and completed the swim leg of the Cairns Ironman 70.3 as part of a team.

Most people could not do that fully fit but to achieve it just over 24 hours after a state league basketball game and an ankle injury, that is some resilience.

Import slams ‘ville

WE did not see his best on Friday night but Toowoomba Mountaineers import Jalil Abdul-Bassit lit up Townsville for 41 on Saturday night.

The former NBA D-League guard did some good things against the Marlins but Damon Heuir did a more than solid job of keeping him quiet.

He took 28 shots to get those 41 points against the Heat, in a Kobe Bryant-style performance down south in the ‘Ville.

Rockets fall flat

IT is fair to say the sting has been taken out of Friday night’s contest with Rockhampton with Marlins championship skipper James Mitchell missing with injury.

He is an optimistic man though the Rockets forward, saying this week he is hoping to face his former club in a final later in the season as a return to the Fish Tank. The Marlins travel to Rocky later in the season but it is not the same as a meeting in the Far North.
