Give it a gallop for Boxing Day fun

THOUSANDS of South Australians will be betting on a sunny day at the races today, rolling out their picnic rugs for a family day at Morphettville.

South Australian Jockey Club chief executive Grant Mayer said more than 5000 people were expected to enjoy a family-friendly program of activities and horseracing.

He said the Boxing Day Races would come off the back of “a really successful” Melbourne Cup event and the Twilight race meeting earlier this month, which attracted about 5500 punters.

“People are rediscovering Morphettville and finding different reasons to come,” he said. “It is not just about racing, it is about having a great time with family and friends.”

Families are encouraged to bring their own picnic lunch to the event, which will also feature a Build-A-Bear workshop for children and live entertainment, sporting activities and bouncy castles.

For cricket fans, the Boxing Day Test will be shown on a big screen.

Melissa Barnes, of Glenelg, said attending the races was a “great” idea for families.

She said her two children — Arlo, 5, and Reid, 2 — “really like seeing the horses”.

Gates open at 11am and entry is free for children under 18. Details: morphettville.com.au.
