THEY would love to kick a few goals or take a few big pack marks but this week is about more than on-field success for the Cape York Crusaders.

The under-12s Crusaders, who have players hailing from the Torres Strait, Normanton, Weipa, Cooktown, Cairns, Mapoon and almost everywhere in between, have been invited to compete at the Queensland School Sports under-12s AFL Championships in Mackay.

The 23-person playing group all flew into Cairns on Tuesday ahead of their first game together as a group today.

The tournament is usually for school-based regions but the Crusaders were invited and AFL Cape York development manager Sean Hunter says the trip is not just about footy.

The Crusaders players will also participate in education programs about leadership and healthy choices.

“These kids need to be attending school, doing well at school and well behaved in the community,” Hunter said.

“That involves family, community and school.

“Our team covers almost 400,000sq km, including nearly every part of the Torres Strait and the Cape being represented.”

The Crusaders have three core pillars they stand by: responsibility, pride and respect.

“Hopefully after this, they can deliver these messages and be leaders in their community,” Hunter said.

“This is the first stage of the development program and hopefully they can grow through the age groups.”

The Crusaders will play their first game in Mackay today before finals start on Saturday.
