Ex-Dog, Hawk among Sun casualties

We’ve already seen a long list of retirements including some of the biggest names in the game.

And now 10 clubs are conducting end-of-year interviews with players and starting the tough calls on who will be around next season.

Gold Coast has started its cull with five players advised they will not be offered contracts for next season.

Former No.5 draft pick Jarrad Grant and former Hawk Mitch Hallahan are the major casualities.

Rookies Keegan Brooksby, Ryan Davis and Cameron Loersch are also looking for new clubs.

“On behalf of everyone involved with the Gold Coast Suns, we want to commend the players for the contributions they have made to the club. We wish them every success and all the very best for the future,” Suns footballer operations manager Marcus Ashcroft said.

Last week Carlton cut the number of former Giants on its list by two as it confirmed five list changes on Thursday.

Kristian Jaksch, Liam Sumner and Andrew Gallucci have been told their contracts won’t be renewed, while Daniel Gorringe and basketballer Matthew Korcheck announced their retirements.

Jaksch joined the Blues at the end of 2014 along with Mark Whiley in a trade for draft picks seven and 19. Whiley was delisted last year while Jaksch survived another season on the list but didn’t crack a senior game this year. He played just seven at the Blues.

Sumner played 20 games for the Blues, including four this season, while Gorringe managed four matches after arriving from Gold Coast.

Blues football manager Andrew McKay left open the possibility of redrafting Sumner.

“I would like to thank Kristian, Liam and Andrew for their contribution over their time with us. All three players have shown growth and development during their time at the club,” McKay said.

Earlier, North Melbourne became the first club to start the difficult task of trimming the list.

The Roos have advised Lachie Hansen, and two rookies, that they won’t be offered a contract for next season.

It ends his career on 151 games, including 13 this year, after being recruited with pick three in the 2006 draft.

“Lachie has been a delight to coach and has been one of the most dynamic, versatile players in the league. His ability to play forward or back for us was a tremendous asset to the team,” coach Brad Scott said.

Rookies Will Fordham and Matt Taylor have also been cut.

“It’s always a tough time of the year advising certain players that their contracts won’t be renewed and the past two days have been no different,” football manager Cameron Joyce said.

“Will and Matt have taken good strides and shown great development in their time with us and I sincerely hope their football journeys continue for many years to come.

“We wish them some individual and team success in the not too distant future regardless of where they end up playing next.”
