Everton vs Liverpool LIVE updates: Team news and line-ups; Mohamed Salah OUT of squad

Everton go head-to-head with rivals Liverpool looking to end their 16-match run without a win against their Merseyside rivals.

It is more than seven years and 16 matches since the blue half of the city was able to celebrate victory over their closest rivals, with Liverpool winning four of the last five encounters.

But the derby is the filling in the sandwich of Liverpool’s Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City and, after the Reds’ stunning 3-0 victory at Anfield on Wednesday, they head into the match with more than half an eye on the second leg.

Forward Mohamed Salah is unlikely to be risked after sustaining a groin injury against Manchester City in midweek while midfielders Emre Can (back), Adam Lallana (hamstring) and Ben Woodburn are all out.

Anyway, Premier League leading scorer Mohamed Salah (29 goals) sustained a groin injury in the midweek Champions League win over Manchester City and manager Jurgen Klopp is not prepared to risk him.

Liverpool supporters seem pleased with the decision, but his absence means striker Danny Ings gets the nod.

Fans are not so happy about this.

STICK OR TWIST…

11:50: Sam Allardyce has already faced Liverpool twice this season within the space of a month with an FA Cup third-round exit following a 1-1 draw at Anfield weeks earlier.

On both occasions he has tried to play a defensive game: they had just 21 per cent possession in December and 39 per cent in the cup game.

However, such a style does not sit will with Everton fans who have been vociferous in their criticism of the football they are witnessing.

With Liverpool’s injury situation, and a crucial Champions League quarter-final at Manchester City on Tuesday, there is no better time to go for the jugular but that would mean departing from his methods and opening up the game – which would risk being torn apart by the Reds’ counter-attacking.

So what I’m basically saying is: Will Allardyce give it the biggun or settle for a point? I think we all know the answer to that question.

Tom Davies comes in for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, while Idrissa Gueye returns from injury and is on the bench.

11:35: Liverpool striker Danny Ings is handed his first start under Jurgen Klopp as the boss names a stronger line-up than anticipated for the Merseyside derby at Everton.

Ings was part of a front three including Sadio Mane and Dominic Solanke, with Mohamed Salah (groin) not risked ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg at Manchester City.

Nathaniel Clyne is given his first outing of the season at right-back in a defence which also includes Virgil van Dijk, Dejan Lovren and a third centre-back Ragnar Klavan on the left.

Captain Jordan Henderson – suspended for Tuesday – James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum are in midfield, with youngsters Conor Masterson and Curtis Jones named among the substitutes.

11:30: Mega changes for Jurgen Klopp. He’s starting with Danny Ings and Dominic Solanke up front. Mohamed Salah is out altogether, while Roberto Firmino is on the bench.

Idrissa Gueye should be fit to return for Everton. The influential midfielder missed last weekend’s defeat to Manchester City with a hamstring problem but took part in a full training session on Friday.

All Everton’s other injury problems are longer-term but defender Ashley Williams is available again after completing a three-match ban following his dismissal against Burnley.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has a raft of injuries to contend with. Forward Mohamed Salah is unlikely to be risked after sustaining a groin injury against Manchester City in midweek while midfielders Emre Can (back), Adam Lallana (hamstring) and Ben Woodburn are all out.
