Didier Drogba set for Chelsea return after rejecting Corinthians offer

The former Ivory Coast international this week rejected a chance to continue his playing career at Brazilian club Corinthians.

The 38-year-old striker has been without a club since leaving MLS outfit Montreal Impact last month, where he spent one-and-a-half seasons.

He said: “There have been a lot of rumours linking me to a move to Corinthians, but it was important for me to speak with Mr Roberto de Andrade, the President of the team, which I did.

“I explained to him that whilst I am very honoured at their interest in me joining the club, it does not feel like the right move for me at this time.

“I would like to thank the club and all the Corinthians fans for the messages and wish you all every success for the new season.”

And Brazilian newspaper Globo claim Drogba’s decision to turn down Corinthians has opened the door to returning to Chelsea as a coach.

Drogba, who scored 164 goals for Chelsea over two stints, was said to have been offered the assistant manager role under Guus Hiddink last term but decided to continue in the MLS.

He has also been linked with a return to Marseille and a move to the Australian A-League.
