The 31-year-old three-time Tour de France winner posted a picture of his broken bike on Twitter but said he was not hurt in the incident.
The Team Sky rider wrote: “Just got rammed on purpose by an impatient driver who followed me onto the pavement! Thankfully I’m okay. Bike totaled. Driver kept going!”
The picture was geotagged from Beausoleil in France, close to Froome’s home in Monaco.
Froome is due to begin the defence of his Tour de France title on July 1, with this year’s Grand Depart taking place in the German city of Dusseldorf as the first two stages of the race take place outside of France.
Froome is eyeing a third consecutive tour win and his fourth overall – when he would join the likes of Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain as four-time winners.
Kenyan-born Froome, 31, won Olympic medals for Team GB at London 2012 and Rio 2016.
