Carabao Cup final: Why is Ospina starting for Arsenal and not Petr Cech? Reason revealed

Ospina, 29, won the FA Cup last season as a No 2 keeper and he will play against Manchester City today.

Ospina’s selection means the club’s No 1 Petr Cech will have to watch from the stands.

But Arsenal boss Wenger explained how he decides to appoint a ‘cup keeper’ before the season – and that both of his men are well aware of the situation.

He said: “You need two keepers with the intensity of football these days.

“If you don’t have a good second goalkeeper you cannot win any trophy, and if you want two top-class keepers you have to give them games or they don’t stay.

“In my head Ospina is not definitely a No 2 – because he’s in a fight with Petr Cech.

“He is a world-class goalkeeper who is unfortunately at the moment my No 2.

“I tell them how it is at the start of the season, who will be in the Premier League. If the keeper does not perform, I get them in and say, ‘Look, you cannot play in the next game’.

“Cech has performed well. If Ospina becomes No 1, then Cech will become the cup goalkeeper.”
