Burnley 1 – Newcastle 0: Jeff Hendrick goal enough for Clarets in dour game

Ireland international Hendrick slammed home from close range and Newcastle failed to clear a rare Burnley opening.

Toon striker Ayoze Perez had the most meaning shot of the game before the opener – forcing a neat save out of Nick Pope 50 minutes in.

Indeed, there was a real sense of relief when Hendrick hit the net, controlling Johann Gudmundsson’s cross before rifling home unmarked.

Joselu went close late on for the visitors, while Jonjo Shelvey saw a ranged effort saved.

And Pope tipped away Isaac Hayden’s shot in stoppage time to seal the result.

The win moves Burnley up into seventh place, leapfrogging Newcastle and behind Liverpool on goal difference.
