Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2017 qualifying results LIVE: Three-way battle for pole expected

Max Verstappen topped the timing sheets in both Friday sessions while Daniel Ricciardo also showed some good pace.

However, all drivers struggled to find grip on the new tarmac of Baku’s narrow street circuit.

Ferrari have shown good pace, Kimi Raikkonen second on Saturday morning, but Sebastian Vettel spent much of the morning in the garage because of a massive hydraulic leak.

With tyres difficult to get into the right operating temperature, there is a random element to qualifying that could see a number of cars out of position on Sunday.

Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2017 qualifying one

Eliminated: 16th Fernando Alonso (McLaren), 17th Romain Grosjean (Haas), 18th Marcus Ericsson (Sauber), 19th Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren), 20th Jolyon Palmer (Renault; did not participate).

Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne will both take massive grid penalties and as such did minimal running in Q1.

With Jolyon Palmer also not competing because of an engine fire in FP3, only two drivers were realistically in danger of elimination.

Romain Grosjean suffered a rear lock-up to allow Pascal Wehrlein to brighten up Sauber’s dark week by making it into Q2.
