Australian Open 2018: Hyeon Chung makes extraordinary Roger Federer claim

Chung booked his place in the last four of the tournament with a routine win over Tennys Sandgren – 6-4, 7-6, 6-3.

Although the South Korean needed six match points to get over the line, the result was never really in doubt.

Roger Federer faces Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals in the evening session, and the Swiss legend is looking to retain his Australian Open crown.

Chung has proven to be one of the surprise packages in Melbourne and has knocked out Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev.

But he doesn’t seem to be too fussed about his semi-final opponent.

When asked if he’d rather face Federer or Berdych in the last four, Chung tried to provide a diplomatic answer.

“I don’t know,” he said.

“It’s 50-50, I don’t care.”

Chung also revealed that after going 40-up in his final service game, his thoughts wandered elsewhere.

He added: “At 40-0 up I was thinking about what to say in the ceremony.”
