Aussie golf star’s stunning win, $10m boost

AUSTRALIAN Marc Leishman has scored a superb wire-to-wire victory at the PGA Tour’s prestigious BMW Championship.

The 33-year-old overcame some late pressure in Monday’s (AEST) final round to put himself among the leading contenders the FedEx Cup’s whopping $ US10 million bonus prize, to be decided next week.

Leishman carded a final round 67 to win by five shots ahead of Englishman Justin Rose and American Rickie Fowler. Fellow Aussie Jason Day finished fourth, seven shots back.

After taking a five-shot lead into the final round, the Australian’s lead was cut to two as Rose made a late charge. However two huge back-to-back birdie putts on the 15th and 16th holes set up the win, which he completed with a birdie on the last.

It was Leishman’s third career victory and second this season after he also won the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March.

Leishman claims a winners’ cheque of $ US1.57 million but it might be just a taste of the riches to come.

By winning he guarantees himself a top five seeding for next week’s season-ending Tour Championship, meaning a win will guarantee him the $ US10 million FedEx Cup prize.
