Ashes: Joe Root claims England can still win the Ashes despite heavy second Test defeat

The Three Lions had a nightmare final day in Adelaide where they lost Chris Woakes to the second ball of the day – and that set the pace for the rest of the morning.

Josh Hazlewood turned up the heat with the ball and then the big one fell – Root dismissed following an awkward edge.

The remaining wickets were just routine for the Aussies and there are now serious worries over a series whitewash.

But Root is confident that he has seen enough in his team to spark a turnaround when they head to Perth for the next Test.

“Yes definitely (we can still win the series),” Root told BT Sport.

“As I’ve said, last night and the day leading into that second innings we showed what we can do and we showed the side which we actually are.

“We need to make sure that we repeat those performances for longer periods of time.

“We came to the ground expecting.

“We were right in the game but losing early wickets hampered our chances.

“The way we went about it yesterday was exceptional and that has to be the benchmark going forward.
