Tottenham eased past Arsenal at White Hart Lane to guarantee they finished above their north London rivals for the first time in 22 years.
Dele Alli netted his 21st goal of the season in the second half, with Harry Kane doubling Spurs’ lead 146 seconds later from the penalty spot.
And Wenger has applauded Tottenham for ending their 22-year wait, but admitted statistically it had to happen sooner or later.
On Spurs finishing above Arsenal, the Arsenal boss said: “Well done to them, but when you start the championship the target is not to finish above Spurs, it is to fight for the title.
“In 20 years it happened once. Mathematically it has to happen once.
“We are not happy with it but we don’t compare ourselves to Spurs, we compare ourselves to where we want to be.”
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was thrilled for the club and the fans to finish above their fierce rivals, but admits they have bigger fish to fry.
The win saw Spurs move four points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea after the Blues thrashed Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park earlier in the day.
Pochettino said: “To be above Arsenal for the first time in 22 years is fantastic for our fans. It is fantastic for us too, but we want to win the title.
“In Italy and Spain, when you are playing for the title, the teams play at the same time.
“Here in England it is different with the fans wanting to watch the teams live. We understand that.”
