Arsenal legends call out Gunners over arrogant stance regarding Arsene Wenger's future

Paul Merson, who played 423 games for Arsenal, says the club are only interested in making money which is why Arsene Wenger looks set for another two years in charge despite not winning the title since 2004.

The issue led to fans fighting among each other in the terraces during the 2-2 draw with Manchester City on Sunday, but in the eyes of Merson the board are carrying blithely on.

“There is an arrogance of Arsenal over how this could happen,” the Sky pundit said.

“Are the board worried about fans fighting each other? I don’t think there is anyone there thinking ‘we have to stop this’.

“They will look and go ‘let them fight, if they don’t come back next year there is a list that long of people who want season tickets’. It sickens me.”

Meanwhile, Alan Smith, the talisman of the George Graham era, feels at the very least it is time for Wenger to relinquish some of his powers.

“It might make some sense to have a director of football to share the load, instead of him being a control freak who wants to have a handle on everything,” he said.

“He needs to concede some of that power and listen to other people’s opinions a bit more.”
