Wood hopes for welcome back gift

KELSO Wood is set to return to the races for the first time since leaving hospital to supervise the return of talented three-year-old Snitzkraft at Ipswich on Saturday.

Snitzkraft is set to run the shortest price of the day, quoted at $ 1.50 with UBET.

He was touted as one of the likely stars of the winter carnival, but after a first-up run on testing ground at Eagle Farm, failed to fire next time out at Doomben and was spelled.

Soon after the carnival, Wood became seriously ill and spent two months in hospital.

Wood has slowly been getting back into the training routine and he’s hopeful Snitzkraft can give him a welcome back gift on Saturday.

“Bloody oath!” he said when asked if a win would put an extra string in his step.

“I think he’s going pretty good and I’m hoping he will get back to that early two-year-old form. I would love to take him south. The one query is that he might be a bit underdone, but I’m hoping class might see him through.”

Both three-year-old races on Saturday are dominated by short-priced favourites, with Tony Gollan’s Miss Exfactor at $ 1.80 to win the second event on the card.

Miss Exfactor boasts outstanding formlines, having run second to Houtzen on debut before taking care of Golden Rose aspirant Shogun Sun second time out at 1200m.

She romped home in a trial at Deagon earlier this month and is out to cap a great week for premier trainer Tony Gollan, who together with wife Jane welcomed baby daughter Jamieson to the family on Thursday morning.
