TOP Queensland prospect Liam Wilson had just the motivation for his next fight when all 18 of his boxing teammates won medals at the huge national Golden Gloves tournament at Acacia Ridge on Sunday.
Wilson, 22, one of Australia’s best amateur boxers of the last decade, was at the Acacia Ridge Hotel to see 12 teammates from the Pine Rivers PCYC win gold medals and six more win silver.
Following a shock exit in the second-round at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Wilson will have his second pro fight at the Fortitude Gym on Saturday, September 22, against Fijian Jim Nalawa, who is unbeaten in three pro starts.
“Seeing all the kids from our gym win medals was a great boost for Liam,’’ said coach Benny Harrington.
The Fortitude card next month will also see the pro debut of six-time Irish amateur champ Conor Wallace.
The light-heavyweight is a former sparring partner for mixed martial artist turned boxer Conor McGregor and has been sparring in Australia with Sydney-based Tim Tszyu, the unbeaten son of former world champ Kostya Tszyu.
Meanwhile, the Pullman Hotel in Brisbane will host super-middleweight Rohan Murdock against Argentina’s Pablo Nievas in the main event of a card on September 8.
The Pullman undercard will feature such Queensland stars as Commonwealth Games silver medallist Joe Goodall, Jess Rettalack, Matt Casboult, Michael Whitehead and Curtis Cobbo Riley.
