Why a luggage padlock will NOT stop someone breaking into your suitcase

Many holidaymakers often go to extreme lengths to make sure their suitcase contents remain untouched.

Some airports even offer plastic wrapping for suitcases to ensure they aren’t tampered with.

Most travellers instead choose a trust padlock to keep their luggage safe.

However, a video shows how this might not be as safe as previously thought.

The video shows a suitcase that has been locked with a standard padlock.

A man then grabs a simple pen as he digs into the zipper of the suitcase.

By poking it through the spokes, he then pulls it all the way across, opening the suitcase completely without unlocking it at all.

He is then able to pull the locked padlock across the suitcase again afterwards, hiding the fact that it has been tamped with.

User David Cameron on forum Quora explained how it can be used for nefarious methods:

He wrote: “Why should you care? Smugglers and thieves.

“Most major airports have crime problems.  Zippers are easy prey for thieves taking things out of your bags (even with a lock on it)

“Or worse, they allow smugglers to place contraband into your suitcase for pickup at your destination.”

Travellers should also avoid using luggage tags on their suitcase.

If they add all of their details onto it, a stolen suitcase can then be located back to a home address, usually with the keys inside it.

Instead, adding just a name and phone number is the best method for this.

It is also worth taking photos of the suitcase so it can be easily identified if lost.
