Viper valedictory victory lap: Watch U.S. team's final run at Nurburgring

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been following the attempts by a team of Dodge Viper enthusiasts to recapture the production-car lap record at the Nürburgring.

Dodge once held the Ring record, actually not once, but twice, long ago with the previous-generation Viper ACR, but it never went back with the latest ACR. And now, of course, the last Viper has rolled off the assembly line, and the factory has been shuttered. So this team of Viper privateers took the quest into their own hands and has been in Germany, where the intense summer heat has been an enemy of tires and official times.

The record, held by the Lamborghini Huracan Performante, stands at 6 minutes, 52 seconds. The Viper team’s attempts fell short at 7:03.23 and 7:03.45, with the final run shown here timing out at 7:01.3. (That’s no spoiler, since it says it in the title card.)

So yes, that’s 9 seconds short of the record. But the attempt shown above leaves a Viper Nation proud.
