Thousands protest planned judicial overhaul in Romania

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Romania’s capital city of Bucharest on Sunday, as well as several other major cities, to protest the plan to overhaul the country’s judiciary. The demonstrators chanted, “Thieves, thieves,” branding the ruling Social Democrat (PSD) party the “red plague.” The proposed amendments, backed by the PSD-led coalition, which enjoys a large majority in the country’s parliament, have been widely criticised within the country and in the EU. Back in August, the European Commission voiced concerns over the proposed reform, citing fears that it might politicize the judicial system and hamper the country’s efforts in the fight against corruption.
