The most corrupt countries in the world – does the UK make the list?

The most corrupt countries have been revealed in a new study.

The annual Corruption Percept Index analyses 180 countries, on how they are perceived by the public sector.

They are ranked from zero to 100, with 100 being the least corrupt.

But where does the UK come? Thankfully the country has improved from last year.

The least corrupt countries were found to be New Zealand and Denmark, with a ranking of 89 and 88, respectively.

They were closely followed by Finland, Norway and Switzerland who came in joint third, followed by Singapore and Sweden in joint fourth.

Thankfully the UK was next in the list, coming in at fifth along with Canada, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Germany.

The United Kingdom had a score of 82, an increase from their score of 74 in 2012.

The report states that the UK has “significantly improved” in recent years.

Yet despite the improvement, it also warned that countries are “moving too slowly in their efforts” with many countries making “little to no progress”.

Patricia Moreira, managing director of Transparency International commented: “Smear campaigns, harassment, lawsuits and bureaucratic red tape are all tools used by certain governments in an effort to quiet those who drive anti-corruption efforts.

“We’re calling on those governments that hide behind restrictive laws to roll them back immediately and allow for greater civic participation.”
