The Mazda CX-5 Crossover Outsold All Other Mazdas Combined in January

We’re big fans of the Mazda CX-5, which won one of our 2018 10Best Trucks and SUVs awards, and we really like the rest of Mazda’s U.S. lineup, too. The American buying public only seems to agree with us on the first part of that equation, however, because the CX-5 sold more units in January 2018 than every other Mazda vehicle combined. The compact crossover’s 13,463 sales this past month represents a huge increase of 67 percent over last January, helping to propel Mazda to an overall 15 percent sales increase for the month.

Add up sales for the Mazda 3, 6, MX-5 Miata, CX-3, and CX-9, and you come to a total of 11,499 units, or only about 46 percent of Mazda’s monthly total. The 3 was the top seller of those, with 5825 units sold, but it, the 6, and the MX-5 Miata all declined significantly, bringing Mazda’s total non-crossover car sales for January to a 28 percent decline compared with last January. The CX-3 subcompact crossover (1350 units) and CX-9 mid-size crossover (2336 units), itself a 10Best Trucks and SUVs winner, fared better, with increases of 14 percent and 47 percent, respectively, but even those improving numbers only made up a small fraction of the CX-5’s total.

Mazda’s depressed car sales might be partially attributable to some impending changes to the lineup: The updated 2018 Mazda 6 is soon to go on sale, and a redesigned Mazda 3 with new Skyactiv-X engine technology is waiting in the wings, too. Those changes should help boost 3 and 6 sales at some point, but we’re sure that Mazda isn’t complaining about all those CX-5s flying off the lots in the meantime.
