The Early Oil: Sandown Hillside

UNDEFEATED mare Sprightly Lass looks destined for bigger things and she appears well placed to extend her winning run at Sandown.

The Hawkes Racing-trained four-year-old made it three from three with a three-lengths romp at Moonee Valley last start. Herald Sun form analyst also likes the fact she has soft track form.

SANDOWN HILLSIDE

Track: Good 3. Rail: 8m out.

R1 (12.55pm): BUCKS DAY PLATE (1000m)

Tony McEvoy holds the key. He produced two impressive trial winners at Cranbourne on Monday, LOGAN RIVER (5) and SANCTIMONIOUS (6), who make their debuts. Logan River, by the all-conquering Snitzel, led throughout to win his trial, while Sanctimonius sat off the speed and also won with something in hand. SEBERATE (7), from the Lindsay Park team, finished his trial off in the manner of a good horse when second to Hill Of Grange. CORONEL (2) was a huge tip at his first start at Caulfield when he started $ 5 equal favourite in the Debutant Stakes but he raced wide and hung badly when beaten a long way out. BRITISH MEDIUM (1) also trialled well last Monday.

SUGGESTED BET: LOGAN RIVER to win.

R2 (1.30pm): CHANDLER MACLEOD HCP (1300m)

HOLY FREEZE (5) was held up on the turn last start but finished on well when third to ECHO JET (1) at Sandown Lakeside over 1200m. He will meet him 2.5kg better and will also be better for the experience as he raced greenly in the closing stages. Also, he won his debut on a Heavy 8 at Hamilton before that. ROYALE EFFORT (9) hasn’t started since he finished a close third to Tamasa over 1400m at Bendigo who then should have won at Flemington. BELLEGANO (4) resumes but she looked above average during winter with two wins and a second from three starts, and she was adept on wet tracks. MEMORY BANK (3) is also promising with two wins and a third placing from three starts.

SUGGESTED BET: HOLY FREEZE to win.

TAB MARKET MOVERS: Holy Freeze $ 4 — $ 3.90, Kasi Farasi $ 7.50 — $ 8.

R3 (2.05pm): CLANBROOKE RACING HCP (1600m)

MRS GARDENIA (1) is a promising mare who looks well placed after her second in the Group 3 Summoned Stakes over 1500m at this track. She rises two kilograms after three-kilo claim from Ethan Brown reduces her weight from 60kg to 57kg. She’s had one start on a wet track for a second at Cranbourne at her second start. FUDGED (6) has won her last two starts impressively, including her last one over 1500m at Sandown Lakeside. She will only carry 51kg after three-kilo claim for Stephanie Thornton. LA FLEURETTE (5) ran second to the in-form Another Coldie in the Donald Cup last start. TOFFEE NOSE (3) has the talent to be a factor in this.

SUGGESTED BET: MRS GARDENIA to win.

TAB MARKET MOVERS: Mrs Gardenia $ 2 — $ 2.15, Miles Of Krishan $ 10 — $ 9.50, Toffee Nose $ 7.50 — $ 7.

R4 (2.40pm): SPICER THOROUGHBREDS HCP (1600m)

VINLAND (6) battled on well for fifth in the Sandown Guineas behind Villermont which reads well for this. He was impressive winning his maiden at Bendigo before that. STORM HARBOUR (1) is a lightly raced colt who has won his past two starts in great style, coming from off the speed each time to win at Seymour and Donald. ROAR (3) has led throughout to win his past two starts, at Ballarat and then at Cranbourne last Friday night. Stablemate ATONE (5) was impressive winning his debut at Mornington. PROCEDURAL (11) finished second at her third start on a heavy track at Moe.

SUGGESTED BET: VINLAND to win.

R5 (3.20pm): UNITED PETROLEUM HCP (1400m)

The hardest race of the day. Matt Cumani’s three-year-old filly URBAN ROYAL (16) may have more upside than her rivals. She ran home well for narrow win over the useful St Gallen over 1300m at Seymour last start. The extra 100m will suit. Darren Weir’s SILENT GENERAL (13) easily won his maiden at Echuca last start. TELL THE TRUTH (11) was unlucky at Sale last start when just beaten after she missed the start. GUANGZHOU (4) resumes but is a Flemington winner and has the talent to win this first-up. He also has the three-kilo claim of Fred Kersley. IZENASHARK (1) will roll forward and handles the wet.

SUGGESTED BET: URBAN ROYALE each-way.

R6 (4pm): SHEEN GROUP HCP (1000m)

SPRIGHTLY LASS (8) looks a mare destined for better things. She kept her undefeated record intact when she made it three from three when she led throughout to win at Moonee Valley. She drops 4.5kg on that win. She won her debut on a Soft 5 track at Hawkesbury and has also trialled well on Soft 7 and Heavy 9 tracks. CHIAVARI (2) is a consistent mare who will find this easier than her last-start seventh at Group 3 level at Caulfield. She’s had eight starts on soft/heavy tracks for two wins and five seconds. GWENNETH (9) is racing well. She followed Moonee Valley win two starts ago with a third at Rosehill. MISS WONDERLAND (6) is a smart mare resuming. Wet track is a query though.

SUGGESTED BET: SPRIGHTLY LASS to win.

TAB MARKET MOVERS: Dance With Fontein $ 8.50 — $ 7.50, Chiavari $ 14 — $ 13, Essence Of Terror $ 15 — $ 13, Miss Wonderland $ 4 — $ 3.80, Sprightly Lass $ 2.70 — $ 2.50, Gwenneth $ 8.50 — $ 8 — $ 7.50.

R7 (4.40pm): LE PINE FUNERALS HCP (1000m)

There are few if any better wet trackers than JUNGLE EDGE (1) so, although he’s dropping back from 1300m when he won the Kevin Heffernan Stakes at this track last start to 1000m, he’ll still be the one to beat. Georgie Cartwright’s three-kilo claim brings him in with the same weight he carried last start (59kg). GUN CASE (2) also loves it wet and is racing well. He relegated Jungle Edge to third this track and distance in June 2016. He fought on well for third behind Crystal Dreamer this track and distance last start, a race where LADY ESPRIT (5) and ROCK ‘N’ GOLD (4) finished second and fourth respectively. Both have strong claims in this. INVINCIBLE AL (7) ran on strongly for first-up win at Moonee Valley but is a query in the wet.

SUGGESTED BET: JUNGLE EDGE to win.

R8 (5.20pm): LADBROKES HCP (1800m)

NIGHT’S WATCH (9) gave away too big a start when he couldn’t get past his in-form stablemate Another Coldie in the Country Cup Final at Flemington. He drops from 59.5kg to 54kg in this and the long run in and extra 200m should suit him. WAR LEGEND (8) fought on well after racing forward when fourth at Flemington behind Mr Garcia over 1800m. He likes it wet and he’s a Hillside winner over 1600m. TARQUIN (4) had no chance the way he was ridden at Flemington last start when he led carving out fast sectionals. He’s better from off the speed. LONG TIME AGO (3) sprinted home along the fence to win the Group 3 Summoned Stakes at this track last start. Query runner is Lindsay Park’s import AL HAREM (5) at his Australian debut.

SUGGESTED BET: NIGHT’S WATCH to win.

TAB MARKET MOVERS: Coldstone $ 10 — $ 11 — $ 10, Long Time Ago $ 5 — $ 5.50, War Legend $ 9.50 — $ 10 — $ 9.50, Night’s Watch $ 2.50 — $ 2.15 — $ 2.20.

R9 (5.55pm): SCHWEPPES HCP (1300m)

DATA POINT (9) hasn’t quite lived up to his early promise but he looks well placed here. First-up last campaign he won by four lengths at Pakenham on a Heavy 9 carrying 60kg, which is his only run on a heavy track. He will carry 55.5kg after three-kilo claim for Ethan Brown. He’s had three starts at Hillside for three seconds. NIKITAS (1) was unlucky when he resumed at Kyneton when third behind stablemate Got The Goss, who subsequently won again at Ballarat last Saturday. SADDLE THE SUN (16) still has a bit to learn but made it three from three last start when successful at Bendigo last start. MOONLOVER (13) and SEVEN YEAR REWARD (18) have chances.

SUGGESTED BET: DATA POINT each-way.

TAB MARKET MOVERS: Milwaukee $ 4 — $ 4.20 — $ 4, Data Point $ 6 — $ 5.50, Ancient History $ 12 — $ 13 — $ 12, Widgee Turf $ 9 — $ 8.50.
