IF THERE’S one thing Channel Seven’s Brian Taylor is an expert at, it’s making a room full of big AFL names feel awkward.
The former Coleman Medallist is famous for his hilarious “Roaming Brian” segment after AFL games, a charade which involves the jolly 55-year-old entering the winning team’s changerooms and attempting to chat with unwilling stars on live television.
But Taylor’s latest TV stunt may have topped all of this season’s awkwardness in the dressing rooms altogether.
The former Richmond and Collingwood forward gave his brutally honest take on the AFL’s annual media awards night during his “Blowtorch” segment on Talking Footy — and one legend in particular copped a massive spray.
“My Blowtorch tonight, gentlemen, is a little bit in-house,” he said on Monday night. “We have these annual awards which are on (Tuesday) night. It’s a night where we give ourselves lots of trophies and ribbons — everyone’s a winner there, otherwise, someone could become a little unhappy.
“It’s an uncomfortable night to say the least, as there are many enemies sitting side-by-side (like) Robbo (Mark Robinson) and the rest of the room; Nine against Seven; The Age against the Herald Sun; Triple M against 3AW.
“There are Winx-like odds for a massive blue to break out on the night. Whenever someone is awarded a trophy, arguments immediately break out. Usually, media only attend this night if they are sure of winning one of the many little trinkets on offer.”
North Melbourne legend Wayne Carey let out a nervous laugh as Taylor continued his glorious rant.
“This leads me to the guts of my story, when earlier tonight I asked Duck (Carey) if he would be attending the media awards night,” the 55-year-old said.
“He replied with a simple ‘no’ — I thought that was strange, given he’s in line to be the best special commentator for the fourth consecutive year.
“Duck said he’d be mowing the lawn on his ninth storey apartment. So, Duck has become a real media head and has jumped on board a loser’s wagon and (isn’t) attending because he can’t win … it appears quite clear to me you’ve become soft and a sooky baby.”
