Solar Eclipse 2017: Virgin Atlantic passengers get the best view from 35,000 feet

The solar eclipse has been watched by millions of people around the world.

Many Americans even battled out huge traffic jams and roadblocks as they travelled around the country to get the best view of the eclipse, the first one in America in 99 years.

However, 260 people got what was arguably the best view in the world when attempting to catch a glimpse as they flew with Virgin Atlantic over America.

The view from 35,000 feet in the air is certainly a unique way to see it.

The flight from London  Heathrow to Miami offered those flying to see the momentous event with a cloudless and unrivalled view.

The passengers were given special eclipse glasses to protect their eyes as they viewed the beautiful sight.

The flight also worked with onboard Wi-Fi with Panasonic to allow those flying to follow along and interact with everyone else in the world.

Twitter user Owen Humphreys wrote: “An amazing sight from Virgin Atlantic flight to Miami from London #livefromvirgin”

Virgin Atlantic Captain Jason Shergold, said: “I’ve been flying for 31 years, and seen some incredible sights from the flight deck – but watching a total solar eclipse at 35,00ft was one of the most amazing experiences that any pilot could have.

“It was a real honour to captain this special eclipse flight and share the experience with our customers on our way to Miami.”

Malcolm Sutherland from Virgin Atlantic, also commented: “It’s rare enough to catch a glimpse of an eclipse on the ground so to see one at 35,000ft is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“The eclipse is visible for just over a 100-mile radius so when we realised the VS5 flight to Miami would fly into this area at exactly the right time it caused quite a bit of excitement.

“We have worked with the pilots and air traffic control to track the eclipse for as long as possible – giving our customers and crew one of the best views in the world!”

The eclipse first reached totality at 10:15am (6.15pm BST) in Oregon.

It then moved across fourteen of the states in America towards the East Coast in South Carolina.

A leading eclipse website, called Mr Eclipse says that the best part of the eclipse is when the totality when the moon obscures the sun.

It adds: “For a few brief minutes or seconds, the Sun’s pearly white corona, red prominences, and chromosphere are visible.”
