Roma vs Chelsea LIVE: Express Sport brings you the latest Champions League team news, goals and analysis from the Stadio Olimpico including updates of Manchester United’s clash with Benfica and Barcelona’s trip to Olympiakos

17: Back here in Rome the game has settled down significantly. Roma are doing a better job of keeping possession with finding it difficult to press effectively.

MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 BENFICA – MISSED PENALTY

15: Magical footwork from Anthony Martial leads to a handball from Douglas. The Frenchman picks it up and puts it on the spot… saved! Teenage goalkeeper Svilar guesses the right way. It remains 0-0.

11: I’m calling it. This is going to be a thriller. It’s end-to-end with both sides desperate for all three points.

10: Chelsea have conceded a goal in the opening minute of a competitive game for the first time since December 1st 2013.

8: Marcos Alonso powers down the left flank before fizzing a ball across the six-yard box, but nobody was there to meet it. Chelsea look a real threat on the break.

5: Just a word of warning, Chelsea have won their last three games 1-0. Eden Hazard has the perfect opportunity to equalise after slipping behind the defence quite easily, but he delays the shot too long before Alisson makes the save.

ROMA 1-0 CHELSEA – EL SHAARAWY

1: What a hit son, what a hit!

Seconds after Pedro wasted a decent chance for the visitors, Roma have taken the lead in style.

The ball drops kindly for Stephan El Shaarawy, who produces an incredible first-time half-volley that thundered past Thibaut Courtois.

ROMA 0-0 CHELSEA

1: We’re underway across Europe folks. I’m expecting goals, and plenty of them.

TWO MINUTE WARNING

19:43: Here comes the anthem! Feels like it could be a special night at the Stadio Olimpico tonight, but for who?!

WHEN IN ROME…

19:40: This is Chelsea’s first fixture in Italy since 2012-13, when Roberto Di Matteo’s side drew at home with Juventus and lost in Turin.

The sack followed on the way home for the Italian, whose side had come from behind to beat Napoli en route to winning the 2012 European Cup just six months previously.

Chelsea have won one, drawn three and lost five of their matches away to Italian clubs. The win came in the Stadio Olimpico 14 years ago this week, with a 4-0 rout of Lazio under then boss Claudio Ranieri.

19:36: Antonio Conte on why N’Golo Kante isn’t in his matchday squad: “His feeling is not 100 per cent. After a bad injury, it’s not right to push him.”

RIO ON CHELSEA XI

19:35:“Yeah it does (look attacking). To go to Rome, it’s a difficult place to go when you’re playing Roma,” the Manchester United legend said.

“This Roma team are confident, the last game at Stamford Bridge they were superb, clinical, and they’ve got experience. I think in the midfield I’m maybe concerned at just having the two players in there. Fabregas isn’t the most mobile anymore.

“I thought he would have gone in there and thickened it up, maybe (Andreas) Christensen in the back three and Luiz in midfield. But Conte is tactically very aware and he knows this Roma team better than most. We’ll see if it plays out the way he sees it in his mind.”

ELSEWHERE IN EUROPE…

19:30: Obviously our main focus will be on the events that unfold in Rome, but we’re also building-up to tonight’s other games.

Manchester United will look to wrap up qualification for the Champions League knock-out phase against Benfica.

Celtic welcome Bayern Munich to Parkhead, Barcelona travel to Olympiakos and Paris St-Germain have the chance to do the double over Anderlecht.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Nizaar: Morata, Pedro and Hazard (MPH) looks like Conte preferred front three. He didn’t get a chance to use it until Watford

Zach: So glad Rudiger is playing again tonight. Deserves it after a good performance at the weekend.

Java: Watching tonight’s match is gonna be like watching a horror flick, you know the actors are gonna get killed but u can do zilch about it!

MORATA STEPS IN IT

19:25: Alvaro Morata’s had a rollercoaster week.

He started by telling Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport that he was unsettled at Chelsea as he found London to be “stressful”.

Not smart.

A day later he insisted he is committed to Chelsea, and would sign a ten-year contract if he could.

Smart.

Very Basil Fawlty. I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it…

NO SPOILERS

19:20: My plan to watch the final of the Great British Bake Off while eating my bodyweight in cake has been temporarily put on hold because of tonight’s games.

Needless to say, any spoilers will result in a long and sustained personal vendetta…

ROMA RECORD

19:15: Roma have won just won of their last eight Champions League matches at home, losing four.

They have won eight, drawn three and lost four of their 15 home games against English clubs. That record does not include the 1984 European Cup penalty shootout loss to Liverpool.

They lost to City in 2014-15, ending a run of three straight home wins against Premier League opposition.

TEAM NEWS KLAXON

18:30: The starting XI’s will be filtering through shortly folks. They all seem to be released at different times on Champions League nights. I’m hearing that N’Golo Kante does NOT start tonight.

HALLOWEEN BOYCOTT

18:20: Before we get started, I should warn you that I have absolutely no intention of discussing Halloween tonight.

I’ve seen enough ‘hilarious’ costumes, read enough puns and watched enough cheap Halloween-themed programmes to last a lifetime.

So if you were hoping to read about “Zlatan Ibrahimowitch” or “Roman Abroomandawitch,” I’m afraid you’re bang outta luck.

I feel like the Mark Corrigan of Halloween.

EVENING

18:15: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of Roma vs Chelsea from the Stadio Olimpico.

I don’t know about you, but after watching last night’s atrocious match between Burnley and Newcastle – the Champions League is seriously welcome.

Think of it as a palate cleanser after the worst meal you’ve ever eaten…

Anyway, Antonio Conte’s side could put one foot in the knockout stages with victory in Rome tonight.

But that’s easier said than done against a Roma side who’ve won eight of their last 10 games.

Should be a cracker!

Let’s block ads! (Why?)
