Roger Federer drops huge hint over future tennis plans

Federer, speaking to the German publication tennis MAGAZIN said: “It is not a target destination, as it was London or Rio. I do not want to think again for two and a half years.

“It could be and it would be cool, but I’m not big on Tokyo. “

Federer is currently not eligible for the Olympic Games due to his failure to compete in the Davis Cup.

The Swiss chose to step away from the yearly tournament after a play-off defeat to the Netherlands in 2015.

International Tennis Federation or ITF has announced that in order to qualify, Federer would need to compete in the tournament on a minimum of two occasions between now and 2020 to seal a place at the games.

Federer has previously stated that a return to the tournament is unlikely at this stage of his career, although didn’t rule it out completely.

He said: “I haven’t officially retired from the Davis Cup, so not because of that reason. It’s just because it’s always highly unlikely that I’ll play at this stage of my career.

“I was flag bearer twice. I won gold. I won silver. I feel like I achieved a lot of great things at the Olympics.

“I’m not thinking that far ahead.”

However, the 36-year-old could be handed a wildcard spot by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). Each tournament the ITF can award a place to an unqualified player from the host nation and an unqualified Grand Slam or Olympic champion.

Federer lost out to Andy Murray in the final at London 2012 but did win gold in doubles at Beijing 2008.

Murray also won singles gold at Rio 2016 and will be a favourite if he is at full fitness when the tournament takes place.
