CHAMPION mare Winx might be at prohibitive odds but that hasn’t stopped one punter investing a cool $ 300,000 at $ 1.12 with TAB Fixed Odds on the mighty mare to win the $ 4 million Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Winx had been $ 1.08 for most of the week but eased to $ 1.10 on Friday but there was very little betting activity. When TAB Fixed Odds price assessors eased Winx out to $ 1.12, the punter stepped into with his massive wager to win $ 36,000 on Winx.

Winx, aiming for her 17th successive in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, was rated at $ 1.10 in overnight betting on the big race.

The big bet betters the $ 75,000 at $ 1.10 taken against the mare earlier in the week.

These are the two biggest bets TAB has accepted on Winx during her celebrated winning streak. The others include $ 67,500 at $ 1.15 on her through TAB for the George Ryder Stakes three weeks ago at Rosehill and the $ 45,000 at $ 1.75 wager for the Cox Plate last October.

Winx’s odds are into $ 1.08 for the race but TAB has reported that hasn’t deterred punters from continuing to back the mare with bets of $ 14,000, $ 9,000 and $ 2,500 at those odds.

The shortest Winx has started was in the George Main Stakes last spring when she went to the post at $ 1.09. If Winx remains at her current odds for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, she will be the shortest favourite in a Sydney Group 1 race since Valerius lined up at $ 1.03 (33/1 on) when he won 1961 Chipping Norton Stakes.

Winx is such a dominant favourite that there has been very little betting activity on her rivals. The exception is Winx’s old rival Hartnell, the $ 11 second favourite, with one punter wagering a place bet of $ 10,000 at $ 1.50.

PRICE CHECK

Impending (race five) is a top-class three-year-old who won the Stan Fox Stakes and was placed in the Golden Rose last spring. He has been competitive without winning in three runs this autumn, including his closing third to Jungle Edge in the Star Kingdom Stakes on a very heavy track at Rosehill two weeks ago. Talented colt suited back against his own age at level weights. He looks very good value at $ 9.50.

TRIAL POINTERS

Shazee Lee (race four) is a Scott Singleton-trained mare that has the services of champion jockey Damien Oliver in the $ 400,000 Provincial Championships Final. Her win in the Qualifier at home at Hawkesbury was a barnstorming one. She’s been kept up to scratch with a an easy trial at Randwick and was motoring late under her own steam.

Spright (race five) had excuses for her uncustomary below-par performance in the Surround Stakes at her most recent outing on February 25. The Garry Frazer-trained stakeswinner was absolutely fabulous in her trial at Hawkesbury on March 28, where she rushed past her rivals to win by almost two lengths, showing that kind of acceleration that won her the Brian Crowley and G3 Red Roses last campaign. Stick with her.

WORK WHISPERS

Heavens Above (race nine) is a high-class mare who chalked up a well deserved Group 1 in the Coolmore Classic on March 11. The Tim Martin-trained mare has a chance to add a second ‘major’ in the Coolmore Legacy, formerly known as the Queen of the Turf. The Reg Kemister-owned and bred daughter of Street Cry has been impressive in her work at Rosehill, including that 1000m gallop on Tuesday timed in 1:14.25s, last 600m in 40.37s and a final 200m in 12.88s.

Tycoon Tara (race 10) is having her first run since finishing a close second to star mare First Seal in a G2 at Caulfield on October 15. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained mare boasts a tremendous first-up record of 6s 2-0-2, one of those wins was at the expense of Rebel Dane in the Missile Stakes on a heavy track. Tycoon Tara was partnered by stablemate Defcon in an 800m gallop on Tuesday with the pair clocked in 55.41s, last 400m in 24.54s. Nice work from a quality mare.

THE BEST BET

Dixie Blossoms (race nine) was ridden conservatively from a wide barrier and had to come from last when a fast-finishing third to Zanbagh in the Emancipation Stakes at Rosehill two weeks ago. She had no luck in the Coolmore Classic at her previous run, either. Dixie Blossoms is back on her home track where she excels and the rain-affected track also suits. She has drawn awkwardly again but the Randwick 1600m start is a very fair one. Stick with her.

EACH WAY

Heavenly Anna (race four) ran a blinder when resuming, coming from 15th on the turn to run second behind the flying Pomelo in a 1200m qualifier at Rosehill. She was beaten more than two lengths by Pomelo but was closing rapidly on the line. Pomelo is the $ 2.80 favourite while Heavenly Anna is $ 23. The disparity between the two mares is not that great. Heavenly Anna goes well second up and getting out to 1400m at Randwick will suit her. Tough race but she is over the odds.

THE JUDGMENT

ROYAL RANDWICK

RACE 6: ATC AUSTRALIAN OAKS (2400m)

Andrew Forsman (co-trainer) Bonneval: “She’s very good. Really the main thing was to try to win Filly of the Year and the (NZ) Oaks. They were her autumn targets and I guess this would be the icing on the cake. We thought it looked like the race was dropping away a bit so we thought it was worth taking her over and having a go.”

Mandy Brown (trainer) La Bella Diosa: “Her work on Tuesday and her recovery was brilliant, the best it’s been since the Coolmore. The humidity settling down has also helped her as well. We’re going into it probably still with a question mark over our filly. Is she a stayer or not? Hopefully that question will be answered (Saturday).’’

Glenn Munsie (TAB): “A real Australia v NZ challenge awaits here. Vinery form v NZ Oaks with the wildcard being Lasqueti Spirit who has taken an open company via the wfa path. Nurse Kitchen appeals as the one with upside from the Vinery as she pushes out to 2400m for the first time. Came down centre of track in Vinery and is much better with edge off track as she’ll get in this. Lasqueti Spirit has to be respected with some tough runs to fit her for this while Kiwi pair are right up there.’’

Grant Palmer (bookie): “We like Nurse Kitchen, she arguably should’ve won the Vinery and raced like she will appreciate the step-up in trip. We are keen to take on Bonneval, the only start she raced clockwise she didn’t look comfortable and the opposition she has beaten is questionable.’’

Blake Johnston (bookie): “Nurse Kitchen had the best late splits of the day in the Vinery and she looks ready made for the extra distance. With any luck from the draw she is the one to beat.’’

Terry Kennedy (Sky Sports Radio): “I can’t wait for Lasqueti Spirit to take off and set the pace. Race should pan out beautifully for Nurse Kitchen, who’s sectionals last start in the Vinery were enormous — she’ll do me.’’

Verdict: NURSE KITCHEN

RACE 7: QUEEN ELIZABETH STAKES (1200m)

John O’Shea (trainer) Hartnell: “We’re very happy, he’s been set for one race and he really looks to be coming to a nice peak. Most importantly for him, gate one is a nice gate because if you go back to his Turnbull Stakes performance where he rolled along, he should be able to get some cover and box seat. Obviously, he’ll have to take on Winx, but Hartnell will run the best race of his preparation.’’

Chris Waller (trainer) Winx: “She has had three races this autumn, it has been a trouble-free run so far and she will be very hard to beat. She is in great form and we are hoping she can win again. With only nine runners there is less traffic congestion. “We know Hartnell very well and he is probably the benchmark but you never know where the next good horse is coming from.’’

Glenn Munsie (TAB): “Winx lines up for consecutive win number 17 the way she has destroyed her position this time in surely it’s another procession coming up. Just get out to Randwick and take it all in. If you can’t get there watch it on Sky. Happy Clapper is gallant and ran well when chasing Lucia Valentina last year off a similar Doncaster effort to last week. Exospheric the roughie after some nice work Tuesday morning.’’

Grant Palmer (bookie): “Winx. If they get within 3 lengths of the mighty mare then they would’ve run out of their skins!’’

Blake Johnston (bookie): “The winning margins of Winx is absolutely astonishing considering her opposition. Winx will win but Harlem could be the value for the exacta.’’

Terry Kennedy (Sky Sports Radio): “I’ll be on my feet and cheering Winx, roll on 17 straight wins.’’

Verdict: WINX

RACE 8: SYDNEY CUP (3200m)

Mike Moroney (trainer) Mister Impatience, Vengeur Masque: “Vengeur Masque is probably the pick of the two. He’s had a good preparation with the aim to get him to the Sydney Cup at his best. He’s just kept improving. He’s unproven at two miles but he races like he would get it and he is certainly bred to. Mister Impatience is just a real two-miler. He is also proven on wet ground.’’

Darren Weir (trainer) Big Duke: “I guess he might have taken bigger steps than we sort of thought in this preparation. Everything we’ve put him in, he’s run well. It’s just nice to have him in a good race and the end of a good prep.”

Glenn Munsie (TAB): “Godolphin pair Tally and import Penglai Pavillion for me. Tally gets to 3200m for the first time but has strong form at 2400/2500m. Better record on wet than dry and certainly appeals at odds. Penglai Pavillion is trained by Charlie Appelby, who took all before him with his stayers in the spring and comes here with solid UK form. By all reports has trained on well in quarantine at Canterbury. Winner up to 4200m who likes to roll along which is no minus in a staying race.’’

Grant Palmer (bookie): “Who Shot Thebarman has been set for this and will peak fourth up, he only needs to replicate his gallant fifth in the Melbourne Cup to be featuring prominently. Big watch on Charlie Appleby’s pair, Penglai Pavillion & Polarisation, who will both appreciate the sting out of the track.’’

Blake Johnston (bookie): “Penglai Pavilion has form around some world class gallopers and represents value. Both of the Appleby runners look very dangerous.’’

Terry Kennedy (Sky Sports Radio): “Godolphin’s Charlie Appleby proved during the Spring, he and his horses have what it takes to win here. Penglai Pavilion is the fresh horse from Europe who’ll stay all day. Tally for the quinella at big odds.’’

Verdict: PENGLAI PAVILION
