Pound to euro exchange rate: Sterling BOUNCES back after falling due to French exit polls

The exchange rate is currently at 1.18, rising 0.01 after it was found that Macron and Marine Le Pen will be going head to head for the premiership in France.

Anti-EU Front National leader Marine Le Pen and centrist favourite Emmanuel Macron have surged through the first round of the French presidential election.

Mr Macron, who stood on an anti-Le Pen platform, came in first with almost 24 per cent of the vote.

Populist firebrand Ms Le Pen came a close second with just under 22 per cent.

Marine Le Pen said the “survival of France” was the real decision the French will face when they head back to the polls on May 7.

She called for “all sincere patriots” to back her cause, with her main goal being separation for the EU – much like Britain’s historic Brexit vote.

At 1.17, this is still an overall fall after the pound reached a high of 1.20 after the Prime Minister’s call for the shock general election 2017

The pound was buoyed by Theresa May’s announcement of an early election and the windfall has only just begun according to experts.

Sterling was at a four-month high against the euro and a six-month high against the US dollar.

According to analysts, the election itself is likely to produce similar results.

The election will make Britain’s economic future brighter, according to experts, if the result is decisive.

Chancellor, Philip Hammond, said the positive effect on the pound showed “the confidence that the markets have in the future for this country under a Tory government with a new mandate”.
