Post-Brexit boom: UK tourism hits RECORD high with overseas travellers due to weaker pound

The report found that travellers coming to the UK spent a whopping £2.75 billion on their visit.

Overseas visitors travelling to Britain hit four million in July for the first time ever, with UK residents deciding to stay in the country instead of going abroad falling by two per cent.

Staycation holidays on the rise has meant more money in UK tourism by locals, as many choose to stay at home.

It is thought that the weaker pound has made it a much cheaper holiday for tourists abroad to choose the UK as well.

The breakdown of tourists showed that 15.1 million were from Europe, the highest proportion with a four per cent increase.

However travellers from North America, whilst just 2.9 million, increased by 21 per cent since last year, with a surge of popularity.

Patricia Yates, from VisitBritain told BBC this could be due to the “improvement in airline capacity” especially between the UK and North America.

With budget airlines such as WOW air and Norwegian Air continuing to open up cheap flights between the UK and Canada, it shows how much easier and more affordable it can be for overseas travellers to choose the UK.

Mike Saul, Head of Hospitality & Leisure at Barclays, commented on the results: “The weakness in sterling continues to swell the number of overseas visitors to our shores with 4 million arriving in July alone, an increase of 6 per cent on last year.

“Overseas visitors have now spent almost £24 billion on trips to the UK over the past 12 months.

“In an increasingly competitive global travel market place, these figures are a boost to the UK tourism industry.”

The UK holiday boom has also helped Britain have the strongest retail spending in nearly two years.

Accountancy firm BDO reported the findings after sales values dropped 0.6 per cent in July, before improving in August.

Like-for-like sales values then rose in the UK by two percent, the strongest in four years.

BDO also reported that with more foreign tourists choosing the UK, it means stronger retail spending to improve the economy.

Whilst the end of the holiday season could be a tougher time for the UK tourism industry, it is great news post-Brexit for the economy.
