THE shockwaves of pie-gate continue to reverberate.

It was only a few days ago that Sutton United reserve goalkeeper Wayne Shaw was forced off the team for eating a pie during the FA Cup vs Arsenal — and now Sutton are suffering the consequences.

Sutton had to put a field player in goal Saturday vs. Torquay after their starting goalkeeper was injured because they did not have any backups. Defender Simon Downer came in when goalkeeper Ross Worner went down early in the first half.

It’s such an ironic twist that it almost feels scripted. But of course, that’s what got Shaw kicked off the team in the first place.

Shaw ate a meat pie on the sideline during a fixture vs. Arsenal and quickly became something of a folk hero. That is, until it became clear the event may have been coordinated with Sun Bets, which offered 8-to-1 odds he’d eat a pie on live TV.

Its all about the lads 1:39

Football: Wayne Shaw shot to global fame when he was filmed eating a meat pie, since he has told Good Morning Britain that any publicity thrown his way should only be about the lads.

Now, gambling authorities are investigating his role in the incident to see if it violated betting laws, and Sutton United asked Shaw for his resignation.

Sutton didn’t let their lack of goalkeeper stop them on Saturday, though. Downer, the defender, came on with Sutton down 1-0 and Sutton eventually roared back to a 3-2 win.

No one let Downer near any meat pies.
