Phipps set for Highlanders test

Tahs fall in Dunedin1:02

Super Rugby: The Waratahs have fallen to the Highlanders in Dunedin.

Nick Phipps could line up for the Waratahs.

WARATAHS halfback Nick Phipps has been cleared of major damage to his injured ankle and could line up for NSW against the Chiefs on Saturday.

After playing a strong game in the Waratahs’ loss to the Highlanders, Phipps rolled an ankle and was sent for an x-ray to rule out any structural issues on Monday.

It was feared the Wallabies halfback may have suffered a syndesmosis, which could have sidelined him for 6-8 weeks.

But Phipps recovered quickly and the scans were clear.

Officials said if he can train on Thursday, Phipps will take his place in the Waratahs’ team to meet the Chiefs in Hamilton.

Reserve NSW halfback Matt Lucas remains on standby in Sydney.
