PGA Championship 2017 leaderboard LIVE: Latest scores and updates from Day 3

Jason Day was one of those who rushed to finish his round before darkness caused the tournament authorities to sound the hooter and stop play for the night.

The Australian, who has struggled for form this year after his mother had a lung cancer scare that forced him to fly home, hit a fabulous 66 in the later conditions: rain had softened the greens and allowed those with later tee-times to flourish.

Two more of those were Hideki Matsuyama and Francesco Molinari, both of whom signed for rounds of 64, with the Japanese player joining Kevin Kisner, first-round co-leader, on -8 at the top.

7.45pm: Hideki Matsuyama was on fire but he’s not made a great start today as a par putt just catches the low side of the hole but can’t hang on.

One of his playing partners Jason Day meanwhile has made birdie so they converge on -7, one shot behind leader Kevin Kisner.

7.15pm: If you have the length to cope with the lack of run, this course can be attacked. But it remains punishing and Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas and Paul Casey have all learned that with early dropped shots.

Tony Finau is pretty massive off the tee and has picked up a couple of early shots to move to -1.

But McIlroy’s struggles have continued with a bogey at the fifth, missing a 15-foot putt thanks to what he seems to think was a spike mark.

6.15pm: Even Spieth’s good shots are bad swings at the moment as he someone manoeuvres one straight down the middle at the ninth.

But that was needed after a bit of fun and games at the par-five seventh. The American blasted his second towards the green, only to see it kick out of the rough into the water. To add further insult, Spieth’s drop landed and bounced off the green into the rough, meaning he struggled to get up and down and recorded a bogey.

Rory McIlroy has not made a good start either. He has bogeyed the second to drift to +3 while early flier JB Holmes has dropped another too.

But a couple of players are making moves – Pat Perez is bogey-free with three birdies on his card after 10 holes and he’s up to a tie for 20th at one-over-par.

5.30pm: JB Holmes is FLYING! The big-hitting Kentucky man has picked up five birdies in his first 10 holes – although he has undone some of that good work with a bogey at the 11th. Nevertheless, conditions do look pretty good for scoring with the greens softened up by all that rain.

However, Jordan Spieth has not had a good day so far. He’s only played six holes and has already dropped two shots. He only sneaked under the cut line and will probably be out pretty early tomorrow at this rate.

4.30pm: With the top guys still not really going out any time soon, there isn’t too much excitement around the course at Quail Hollow so far.

However, JB Holmes is giving the spectators something to cheer about. He’s hit consecutive birdies at the fourth and fifth to move up to +3 – which gives you an idea of how far back he started the day.

3.30pm: Another good thing about is the lack of two-tee starts, so everyone will play 1-18 in the normal order. Makes it less confusing for me anyway.

No-one already underway will realistically be challenging at the top but if 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott had any idea of doing so, he might have abandoned that. He’s double-bogeyed the first and is now +7, 15 shots off Matsuyama and Kisner.

2.30pm: We have tee-times! It’s not a very long list with everybody playing in three-balls but the first group are off in about 20 minutes.

As usual on the final two days, the players go off in reverse order so Kevin Kisner, Hideki Matsuyama and Jason Day will be on the tee at 7pm UK time.

For Rory McIlroy fans, your hero tees off at 5.20pm with Omar Uresti and John Hahn.

1.20pm: Spare a thought for Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger. He had his round stopped with just one hole to play yesterday – and he was sat right on the cut line.

He has then had to spend the night dreaming about how not to drop a shot, which is exactly what he has done. A five for the Austrian sees him flying home having missed out on the weekend by the narrowest of margins.

Anyway, the last couple of players are finishing up their second rounds after the weather delay yesterday stopped the action finishing in time. After that, the greenkeepers will be out to move the holes, cut the greens and fairways and get ready for the third round.

The tee-times aren’t out yet but the PGA have said players will go round in three-balls, getting underway around 3pm UK time.
