The 23-year-old is having a fantastic second season in the NFL. He leads the league in touchdowns, with 50, has passed for 5,097 yards and finished the season with a quarterback rating of 113.8.
Mahomes, who will be playing in his first playoff game of his career, has already amazed fans with his passing ability.
The young MVP candidate has already demonstrated he has a left-handed throw and a no-look throw in his arsenal, but he’s now working on a behind-the-back pass as well.
Chiefs backup quarterback Chad Henne told NFL Network reporter James Palmer about Mahomes new trick play.
“As back-up quarterback Chad Henne penning told me, it is an extension of his personality,” Palmer said.
“It’s his creativity. The left-handed throw, the no-look pass.
“Henne told me something he has been working on, something in practice this last several weeks, thats a behind-the-back pass.
“Henne told me he doesn’t know when Mahomes will pull it out, but it looks like we haven’t seen all of Mahomes’ tricks.”
The Chiefs come into the Divisional round of the playoffs as the number one seed in the AFC and the Colts, who are the sixth seed, progressed from the Wild Card round after a 21-7 victory over the Houston Texans.
Despite it being Mahomes’ first appearance Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is confident he won’t be overawed by the occasion.
“So far, I haven’t seen anything that is too big for Pat,” Reid said.
“I’m not worried about that. He’s going to get himself ready just like he does every week to play against a good football team.
“I don’t think he is wired the other way. I’m not predicting anything – that’s not what I’m doing here.
“I’m just telling you, matter of fact, that it’s how he’s wired and how he goes about his business.”
In the build up to the game at Arrowhead Stadium Mahomes revealed he is excited about being in the playoffs.
“Every playoff game is big. For me, this is my first playoff game. I’m excited just to be here and to get the opportunity to go out there and win games like this,” Mahomes said.
“When you’re growing up, you want to go and play games like this.
“When you get older, you want to be a professional athlete and you want to win on the biggest stage.
“For me, it’s all about going out there, being myself, leaning on my teammates and winning a football game.”
